Freed of these cliches, the musicians are at liberty to pursue mixing their various infuences whether it be free jazz, punk rock, or modern classical music.

TENPASTEN`s music is a mixture of various influences, including music styles of Chicago, classical and minimal music and even punk rock. So far, they have performed in Poland and Italy but they also took part in Jazz Fruit Competition (a part of Mladi Ladi Jazz Festival) in Prague in 2016, where they became finalists.

Jazz in the Ruins will be a special performance due to the exchange at the position of alto saxophone player. On this very special occasion Alex Clov will be replaced by Ethan Smith from Cape Town (South Africa).

Ethan Smith is a South African (Cape Town) born musician and composer, playing alto and soprano saxophones, as well as the silver flute. As a student of jazz and improvised music, Smith sites his keen interest in the traditional musics of the world as a main influence to his sound and compositions. He takes a particular keen interest in the musical styles of Africa, South Africa, as well as countries of the far and middle east.

Smith also deems the works of musicians and composers Charles Lloyd, Steve Coleman, Wayne Shorter, Jan Garbarek, Greg Osby and Keith Jarrett as well as South African musicians Abdullah Ibrahim, Zim Ngqawana and Robbie Jansen, to be major influences for his work.

In 2009 Smith was the overall winner of the jazz category of the prestigious "Pick`n Pay / Fine Music Radio"award. In the same year he was offered a one year scholarship to study at the "Norwegian Academy of Music" in Oslo, Norway, where he studied under saxophonist and mentor, Morten Halle.

In 2010 Smith traveled with two time SAMA award nominee Kyle Shepherd`s "fineART" quartet to Denmark and Switzerland to perform at the "Aarhus" and "Riverboat" jazz festivals (Denmark), as well as at the popular "Bird`s Eye" jazz club in Basel, Switzerland. He also had the honour of performing as a member of Cape Town jazz legend Errol Dyer`s band at the "Cape Town International Jazz Festival" in 2013.

We`re still waiting for their first album but we hope that it`s official premiere will take place during our festival!
