Jazz in Ruins 2019 has ended. We had new events, new sounds, new faces, even new venue. But the energy is still the same!

The biggest and the most interesting exhibition of jazz posters created by artists from all over the world was presented during the 15th edition of Jazz in Ruins 2019.

The last concert of this edition, performed by BACKSPACE [augmented], was like a storm which visited Gliwice exactly in the time. It was a live premiere of "AD_DA" album - one of the most interesting improvised music projects on Polish jazz stage! Zbigniew Chojnacki - accordion/electronics, Łukasz Czekała - violin/electronics, Marcin Albert Steczkowski - cornet/electronics.

The second concert of the last day. Gniewomir Tomczyk Project was definitely one ofthe strongest music accents of this festival. Gniewomir Tomczyk – drums / samples / fx, MIN t – vocal / rap / synth bass, Maciej Kądziela – sax, Zdzisław Kalinowski – keys / synth bass.
Special guest: Piotr Schmidt - trumpet.

This was the last day of the festival and it began with concert performed by participants and lecturers of our music workshops. The coordinator of this year's workshops was Jarosław Spałek, who is also a lecturer at Music School in Gliwice.

The second concert of the day was a mixture of folk melody, Slavic energy and bold approach to improvisation prepared by Klara Cloud & The Vultures. Sylwia Klara Zasempa - vocal, Bartosz Dworak - violin, Mateusz Gawęda - piano, Adam Tadel - double bass, Piotr Budniak - drums, Jacek Kochan - second drums.

The third day of our festival and an Tomasz Chyła Quintet from Tri-city in Poland. Tomasz Chyła - violin, Piotr Chęcki - saxophone, Szymon Burnos - piano, Konrad Żołnierek - double bass, Sławomir Koryzno - drums.

A mixture of arts: painting, dance, theatre and music. This was a really unique event which was both a modern dance show and a painting performance. During the second day of the festival, in between the concert we had a chance to see the Dance Theatre "Adepci" from Gliwice led by a choreographer, Anna Hampel. The powerful and colourful element of painting was added by an artist, Monika Krasoń.

"...Two female artists in this project are a sing of growing Women Power in Polish jazz..." The second day of the festival was started by MÓW quartet. Ania Bratek - vocal, Aga Derlak - piano and vocal, Mateusz Szewczyk - bass guitar, Patryk Zakrzewski - drums.

At the end of the first day we could listen to Month of Sundays quartet. Alexander Kranabetter – trumper, Philipp Harnisch – saxophone altowy, Ivo Fina – guitar, Johannes Wakolbinger – drums.

Amazing music played by Aga Derlak Trio. Aga Derlak – piano, Michał Kapczuk – double bass, Szymon Madej – drums.

A great concert to hear and watch! Marvellous performance of O.N.E. Quintet. Paulina Atmańska – piano, Monika Muc – saxophone, Dominika Rusinowska – violin, Kamila Drabek – double bass, Patrycja Wybrańczyk – drums.

The first concert - as every year - was performed by the youngest participants of the festival.

As usual, an important part of Jazz in Ruins festival is the exhibition featuring artworks of young, outstanding artists from all over the world.

This year, Jazz in Ruins began with a special kind of musical invitation.

During the last day we had a chance to listen to really enegretic and full of musical ideas MM3 trio.

We started the final day with the concert performed by the participants and the lecturers of our workshops, which presented the final effects of their work.

The third day of our festival ended with the concert of Algorhythm, presenting their new album 'Mandala'.

After one week of break we could feel the festival emotions again thanks to the concert of Woody Black 4.

On the stage an Austrian quintet chuffDRONE. A strong, jazz feeling. It was really something.

After the workshops there was a time for a presentation of the results of the workshops on the main stage, in front of the audience.

Workshops during the 12th International Festival Jazz in the Ruins focused on the theme: The basics of jazz improvisation and a musical interaction in a band. The lecturers were Jerzy Główczewski I Jarosław Spałek.

Tenpasten initiated the 3rd day of the 12th Jazz in the Ruins. Liliana Zieniawa enchanted the audience with her drums. It was just amazing.

The festival Jazz in the Ruins, apart from being fun also brings out some stress, as well for the artists as for the organisers.

One of the elements of the Festival is the annual poster exhibition, which was officially opened by its curator, Tomasz Kipka.

The Festival began the same way as it did last year - with a concert on the terrace. Or... it would have begun like that if the weather had been better.

It was probably one of the last opportunities to present those gentlemen at the Jazz in the Ruins festival, an event promoting new, upcoming and raising stars of improvising music.

This concert was a bit... familiar.

The second workshops durin Jazz in the Ruins 2015 was focused also on the guitar, but … well, not quite.

The Love and Beauty Seekers, young and highly ambitious music.

The power of the acoustic jazz.

It was one of those concerts that we’ll remember for a really long time.

They have played in the Ruins for the first time. And they were fascinated with the place as well as with the festival’s audience. To tell the truth in the latter it was a mutual feeling.

These were the workshops that don’t happen too often.

The second concert of the first Day of the Jazz In the Ruins was Łukasz Pawlik Project.

The first weekend of our festival is over, so it`s a good moment to sum it up a little bit. We have already written about the new element of the festival – the terrace concert. In our gallery you can see the photos and the videos from this interesting event.

In this year Jazz in the Ruins started in a little different manner, on the terrace of the Victoria Theatre’s Ruins, an hour before an official opening of the festival.

The festival starts in a little while, so it`s a good moment to meet the volunteers who have decided to take part in this interesting artistic event and... to have a good fun at the same time.

The "Young Jazz" exhibition, organised as a part of Jazz in the Ruins festival, is being set up in the beautiful interiors of Victoria Theatre.

In 2014 we celebrate the 200th anniversary of Oskar Kolberg`s birthday.

In the summer of 2014 band released debute CD and tour to support release in Baltic countrues (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland). Jazz in the Ruins was the first place where the CD had been shown to the light.

Łukasz Kluczniak is the saxophonist whose instrument is dominating the music of this band. He also composed five out of six tunes recorded on this album.

Backspace is a group seeking new quality in a mixture of acoustic and electronic music - the sound of space, the shade of rhythm , free-jazz feeling; frozen notes - warm, melted, merged into a new quality and frozen again to become a part of another improvisation, musical interaction.

The band was established at the beginning of 2007 and during the first two years of their existence they won 2nd prizes at three different festivals (Krokus Jazz Festival 2007, Jazz Juniors Festival 2007 in Cracow and DoDж The International Jazz Festival 2009 in Kiev).

Originally inspired by traditional Jewish music, the band developed its own original unique style and sound through constant creative search.

The Czech-Danish-Polish trio was established at the beginning of 2013 in Berlin.

A group from Wrocław which merges jazz traditions with contemporary sound.

The newest project of Łukasz Stworzewicz, the leader of all Silberman ensembles, is created by Dorota Zaziąbło (piano), Mateusz Gawęda (keyboard), Sławek Pezda (tenor saxophone), Piotr Południak (double bass), Wojciech Gąsior (bass guitar), Łukasz Stworzewicz (drums).

During the summer of 2013 we were able to listen to the premiere of Dominik Bukowski`s newest project created together with Sri Harunag, a talented and successful pianist from Indonesia.

HIGH DEFINITION - a quartet consists of young, ambitious musicians, open to either mainstream jazz or classical and avant-garde music.

Krzysztof Pacan inspired by a collaboration with great musicians has begun to create his own compositions.

It`s only the beginning of the show and yet it is obvious that presented music will be far from traditional.

Christian Pabst is pianist and composer.

Anna is not an easy artist to describe. Her characteristic features may actually seem contradictory: gentleness, restless soul, mystery, sensitivity, as well as a strong personality and a sense of humour.

Jazz City Choir was set up by Małgorzata Korczyńska in November 2007, under the patronage of Centrum Łowicka.

That was the second concert of the 8th Jazz in the Ruins. Last year`s debutant. Because it`s the year 2011 brought the debut album of a Polish-Danish team Off Quartet.

VIII International Festival of Jazz in the Ruins in 2012 opened the concert of the Przemysław Strączek International Group.

Workshops took place on the 4-th of August 2012, Saturday and were focused on drums, contrabass and working in the rhythm section of a jazz combo.

We are attracted to jazz – exhibition

During the exhibition we can see posters, projects of album covers and other graphic works dedicated to or inspired by music.

The trombonist, Maciej Fortuna, is one of the most dynamic jazzmen of the young generation.

Mariia Guraievska Ethno Jazz Project is a mixture of folk tradition, jazz improvisation and the guitar sound of rock music.

The band was established in 2010.

A Polish-Danish quartet created by Jazz Department students at Carl Nielsen Academy of Music in Odense (Denmark).
